Skimming Machine

Silver Steel Wire: A general purpose wire manufactured from high carbon steel, .95 to 1.25 per cent, carbon, used for drills, spindles, pinions, etc. A wide used specification is that laid down B.S.  1407.

Skimming Machine: Used for removing bad surfaces from bar or wire. So also entries for grinding and shaving copper rods. Also the name of the machine for polishing the centre part a needle by means of an emery-coat roller.

Slay: A part of a weaving loom which operates horizontally across the lot and which beats the wire into position during cloth weaving. Also known as sleigh, lay or batten.

Slip: On a wire-drawing matching the difference between the circumferential speed of the drawing blocks and t surface speed of the wire. In slip type machines, the capstans are driven fast than the wire which skids over the. the drawing liquor preventing und wear. To avoid slip, special cost arrangements must be made on the machine to meet variations of elongation in the wire so that the capstans n at the same speed as the wire between drawn.

Silvery Wire: Caused by the wire n fouling the guides and tubes during h rolling, and the rod becoming score this scoring is flattened into the rod the following passes and eventual emerges as spills after elongation of I defect by further rolling. Also cause by the corners of square billets being turned over during the roughing stag of rod rolling.

Slot Weave: Also known as rectangular weave. Uses include sand screening and general chemical screening. Basically the  same as plain weave except that the spacing between warp wires differs from that between weft wires. Slug Test: Another name for the upper ending test used to detect surface defect when determining the suitability of wire for hot or cold forging. After heating, if the material is to be hot forged, the sample is hammered on en until it is reduced by a specific amount.
