The primary considerations when choosing insect screen:
Opening size 
The most significant factor in selecting insect screening is the exclusion size.  More specifically, the selected screen should have apertures (openings) slightly smaller than the critter to be excluded.
Appearence
Generally, insect screening is intended to look through,...not at.  When viewing from the exterior darker colors are less noticeable.
Durability
Another aspect to consider is the type of material utilized to weave the screen.  Selecting the correct material involves consideration of the particular application such as the ease of installation, potential of abuse or accidental damage, environmental considerations, desired life expectancy and aesthetics.

Aluminum Insect Screens
Aluminum insect screening is more expensive than fiberglass but much more durable.
Aluminum fly screening is more expensive than fiberglass but much more durable.  It may be cut or trimmed with scissors or light weight sheet metal hand shears.  This material performs well with children and small pets.

Stainless Steel Insect Screens
This specification group is the most durable insect screening available.
The initial cost of Stainless Steel insect screening is significantly higher than aluminum.  The long term life expectancy of stainless steel screens is worthy of the investment. This specification group is the most durable screening available.   
The 0.009" wire diameter (standard) performs well around children and small to medium size pets.The optional 0.011" wire diameter is stronger to last longer around larger pets.
