People call galvanized hardware cloth by many different names, including hot dipped screen wire, galvanized screen wire, or galvanized mesh. Sometimes its use is a name, like soffit screen or gopher screen, raccoon mesh, etc. It is an economical choice for industrial, agricultural and some residential uses. All hardware cloth is first woven or welded from steel wire and then dipped in a bath of molten zinc. This heavy zinc coating is also called galvanizing, serves to protect the mesh from corrosion, and stabilizes the crossover points of the wires, which makes them non-raveling.
